The casing consists of a mixture of peat litter, gypsum and lime.
This casing is pasteurized, which eliminates harmful organisms but retains important bacteria.

Mushrooms that require a coating include.

  • Champignon species (Agaricus)
  • Stropharia rugosoannulata

These species require certain bacteria that occur in the casing layer, without these bacteria, no mushrooms will appear.
 

Species that do benefit from a casing layer but also form mushrooms without these bacteria include.

  • King oyster mushroom (Pleurotus eryngii) the casing can be applied directly to the substrate.
  • Scaly ink mushroom (Coprinus comatus).
